“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” – Dolly Parton
I’m ready for more. Now that 2019 is gone, I’m ready to look forward. And I’m ready to finally embrace this whole motherhood thing.
To be honest with you, only in the past couple months or so have I finally started to embrace motherhood. In the beginning, Chris and I were barely keeping our heads above water. And those were the good days. Basically, we were in survival mode for over a year.
Can you imagine? You’re told from the adoption agency: no, we don’t typically adopt older kids domestically. Three weeks later you’re told: actually, there are 3 sisters who need a home. And three weeks after that, you go from 0 to 3 kids overnight! What on earth were Chris and I thinking? And really, we probably weren’t. We simply knew that our 3 girls needed a home, and we wanted the girls to be part of our family and us to be part of their family.
But what that short amount of time meant was that we had no time to prepare. We had no time to process. We had no time to figure anything out.
Forget 9 months to prepare for a baby.
We barely had 9 days to prepare for a 5 year old, 2 year old and 9 month old. And now, 2.5 years into parenthood, instead of having a toddler and finally getting used to the idea of being a parent, we have a 7 year old, 5 year old and 3 year old. Time is a luxury we have not had with becoming parents. We simply were and are parents.
Time for more.
So only now, 31 months into this parenting thing, am I finally able to admit that I’m ready to embrace motherhood. I’m ready to be more of the person that the girls need me to be. I’m ready to be more of the loving, fun, humorous person they crave. And I’m ready for more time with my girls.
That’s why I’ve decided to stick with one tradition that I gagged at last year. Yes, I’ve decided to have a word for the year.
My word for 2020 is MORE. So here are 20 things that there will be more of in 2020.
LOVE MORE.
MORE MESSINESS.
CUDDLE MORE.
MORE FAMILY TIME.
LAUGH MORE.
MORE UNSCHEDULED TIME.
UNDERSTAND MORE.
MORE DIVERSITY.
SIMPLIFY MORE.
MORE TIME FOR ME.
BE MORE KIND.
HUG MORE.
MORE FUN.
CREATE MORE.
MORE ADVENTURES.
SLEEP MORE.
MORE GRACE.
HEAL MORE.
MORE GRATITUDE.
After a year of just being, trying to cope with many unexpected changes and simply trying to RELAX (my word for 2019), it’s finally time for MORE. It’s time for more out of life. It’s time for more motherhood experiences. And it’s definitely time for more unscheduled time, messiness, cuddles, hugs, family trips and sleep!
P.S. After writing this blog post, a mess of hot bacon and grease was spilled on our porch. That’s not necessarily the type of messiness I had in mind!
